CYCLING WITH ORTHOTICS

Cycling is a tracking sport, there is no landing. The good news is that this means your orthotics will last longer!

Cycling is almost a two-dimensional sport; the repetition of a perfected movement has a phenomenal impact on comfort and performance for the rider. On a bike you have 3 foundations: Your feet, your bum, your hands. Pressures are lower compared to any “landing sports”.

The action of orthotics or insoles on the entire body is immediate and wearing cleats actually prolongs the effect of the orthotics when pedalling. Well grounded, a cyclist will “power in” more when pushing down his foot and will dissipate less energy when pulling his foot back up. It is a win-win

Knees are keys!

Most front and back knee pain are addressed with the saddle height either too low or too high. Most internal knee pain can be addressed with orthotics and cleat repositioning. A foot that lacks support tends to pronate and point outwards (forefoot abduction), which once forced and stuck in a straighter position due to the cleats will negatively impact the front and medial compartment of the knee.

Cycling is a “pronation sport”, and your knee makes a figure-eight shape when pulling/pushing on the pedal. When unsupported, feet pronate and are also source of an excessive pronation at a knee level.

Symmetry and Asymmetry.

Christophe’s fascination with mechanics and biomechanics is what brought him into the world of cycling. In this sport, those two sciences meet and serve the same purpose. The mechanics is for the bike and revolves around a certain symmetry while the biomechanics applied to the rider and is all about the athlete asymmetry.

The body then the gear.

Bike fitting and foot fitting both have the same goal, efficient movement for performance.

PODO focuses on the mechanics of the body (biomechanics), from the overall assessment of the rider, looking at the entire body to the assessment of the cycling shoes (clip-in or clipless). These days those particular parts are rigid and require the orthotics to be precisely adapted to them. Then afterwards we can refer you to a bike fitter, the same way that our patients who ski are referred to a boot fitter once their alignment, balance and posture is perfected with orthotics.
